After Rahul Gandhi stood adamant on his decision to step down from the position of Congress president, in the meantime, Motilal Vora is likely to become the interim chief of the grand old party following the party's humiliating poll debacle.

The 90-year-old Motilal Vora is known to be very close to the bigwigs of the Congress party and has also played a role to nominate the Gandhi scion as the party's Prime Ministerial candidate.

Vora has been a trusted aide of the Gandhi family and served as the treasurer of the party for 18 years, and was succeeded by Ahmed Patel in 2018. The senior Congress leader in the past has served as the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee and was also the MP of Rajya Sabha for Chhattisgarh in 2014.

Top sources have told Republic TV that there are two opposing camps with different takes on the future of the party. While a camp of young guns is in favour for Sachin Pilot to take up the top post, however, the Gandhi family loyalists are proposing names of senior leaders such as- Ashok Gehlot, Sushil Kumar Shinde and others.

In light of this, the question is, does the appointment of loyalist Vora indicate the continuation of the Gandhi-Vadra reign?

In the tweet, Rahul Gandhi released his resignation letter, saying that he takes responsibility for the loss of the Congress party in the 2019 elections. He reasoned his resignation, saying that "accountability is critical for the future growth of the party".

In the tweet, he said that it is an honour for him to serve the Congress party, adding that he owes the country and the organisation a debt of tremendous gratitude and love.
