RIP Ram Jethmalani: Pres Kovind mourns loss of 'distinguished jurist'

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind mourned the loss of veteran lawyer Ram Jethmalani and stated that and that the nation has lost a distinguished jurist

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter and mourned the loss of veteran lawyer Ram Jethmalani.

Ram Nath Kovind mourns the loss the 'distinguished jurist'

Expressing his sadness, he wrote that Jethmalani was known for expressing his views on public issues along with characteristic eloquence and that the nation has lost a 'distinguished jurist, a person of great erudition and intellect'. Read his tweet below:

About Shri Ram Jethmalani: 

For those unaware, Jethmalani served as the law minister and the urban development minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet. He had also served as the Chairman of Bar Council of India. Jethmalani has published many books, namely 'Justice Soviet Style', 'Big Egos Small Men', 'Conscience of a Maverick', 'Maverick: Unchanged, Unrepentant'. He has also written books on various law subjects such as Private International Law, Media Law, and Conflict of Laws. Jethmalani has two biographies written after him, 'Ram Jethmalani: An Authorized Biography' by Nalin Gera; and 'The Rebel' by Susan Adelman.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to his Twitter handle and mourned eminent lawyer Jathmalani's loss. "In the passing away of Shri Ram Jethmalani Ji, India has lost an exceptional lawyer and iconic public figure who made rich contributions both in the Court and Parliament. He was witty, courageous and never shied away from boldly expressing himself on any subject," Modi said on Twitter

Ram Jethmalani, known as a maverick lawyer obtained a law degree at an early age of 17 and started practising law in Karachi until the partition of India. After partition, he moved to the then Bombay province. He was married at the age of eighteen, and later married Ratna Shahani, who was herself a lawyer, in the year 1952. He has two sons and two daughters.
