Statue of Unity will be the tallest statue of the world, beating the current tallest statue China's Spring Buddha Temple that stands at 128 meters

Erected in a record time of 33 months, the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity is a structural prodigy established over the Narmada Dam in Gujarat. This statue of Sardar Patel is set to be inaugurated on his 143rd birth anniversary by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31, 2018.

The foundation stone of the Statue of Unity was laid by PM Modi on October 31, 2013. The statue stands taller than the 93-meter Statue of Liberty, New York, and is four times taller than the Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. It even crosses the current tallest statue -- the Spring Buddha Temple, China that stands at 128 meters by a whopping 54-meters

The 'Statue of Unity' stands on the base of 58 meters and the actual monument is as high as 240 meters. While, the now second largest statue of the world in China, stands on a 19.3 meters lotus throne, placed on a pedestal of 25 meters and the total monument stand high at 153 meters.

"Erected on the banks of river Narmada in Gujarat, the structure is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. This is the world's tallest sky-scraping statue. Every Indian will now be proud to see the world's tallest statue here on Indian soil. Patel, a true son of the soil will adorn our skies too," said PM Modi.

The 182-meter-tall Statue of Unity is not only the World’s tallest but has been built in a very short time. The statue that was built in 33 months is rigid enough to withstand 180 kmph wind speed and is constructed to survive earthquakes measuring up to 6.5 on the Richter scale. 

This ambitious project cost Rs 2,989 crore, and was constructed by 3,000 workers. To build the tallest statue of the world, 180,000 cubic meters of concrete, 18,500 tonnes of reinforced steel, 6,500 tons of structured steel and 1,850 tonnes of bronze cladding was used. 

Prime Minister Modi on his ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio address on October 28 credited the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for uniting the country after the partition in 1947.

To commemorate Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary, apart from inaugurating the ‘Statue of Unity,’ like every year the ‘Run for Unity’ would be flagged off. 

“October 31 marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel, and like every year, the youth of our nation is geared up to ‘Run for Unity’. I appeal each one of you to participate in ‘Run for Unity’ in largest possible numbers,” says PM Modi.
