Smriti Irani announces 'first-ever' initiative under Nirbhaya Fund

Union Cabinet Minister for Textiles and Women & Child Development Smriti Irani on Saturday took to Twitter to announce that Nirbhaya Fund will help set-up Women Help Desks in all Police Stations and Anti-Human Trafficking Units in all districts across the Nation. She also wrote that the initiative is an example of interdepartmental cooperation leading to effective governance under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.

'First-ever initiative of its kind'
Thanking Home Minister Amit Shah, Smriti Irani in another tweet wrote, "Grateful to Home Minister Amit Shah for speedy intervention & ensuring efficacy in fructifying this kind of the first-ever initiative to be implemented through NIRBHAYA Fund. It will go a long way in addressing women & children safety issues."

Various women safety projects under the Nirbhaya Fund
The Centre has sanctioned nearly Rs 4,000 crore for various women safety projects under the Nirbhaya Fund that include financial assistance to rape and acid attack victims and setting up of special police units for women and children. According to a Home Ministry document, the highest Rs 2,919.55 crore has been sanctioned under the 'Safe City Project' being implemented in eight cities - Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, to provide safety to women in public places.

Smriti Irani slammed Gandhi family
In a veiled attack on the Gandhi family, Union minister Smriti Irani in Amethi on October 30 said instead of giving advice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the Amethi administration, they should go for introspection. "The people whose kin face allegations of land grabbing and embezzlement should introspect instead of giving advice to the UP government or the administration of Amethi," she said when asked that Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi had questioned the working of the Amethi police.
