The fragile JD(S)-Congress government failed the trust vote in the Karnataka Assembly after the coalition secured 99 votes against BJP's 105 votes, putting an end to the prolonged political drama.

From coalition tears to 5-star politics, here are five reasons why the Kumaraswamy government was bound to fall:

In the Karnataka Assembly elections of 2018, Congress with 78 seats and JD(S) with merely 37 seats forged a post-poll alliance, against BJP who emerged as a single largest party with 104 seats.

The JD(S)-Congress coalition had claimed the support of 117 MLAs in the 224-member House with an effective strength of 221. 

Seeking the trust vote, Kumaraswamy asserted the Congress-JD(S) coalition government would complete its five- year term while maintaining he was conscious that his party JD(S) does not have a majority on its own.

The differences between the JDS(S)-Congress coalition had been widening with the day, which was explicitly demonstrated by Kumaraswamy's tears on multiple occasions. 

In January 2019, Kumaraswamy complained, with tears, of how he was working like a 'clerk but not a chief minister' as a result of Congress' interference.  Back on July 15, Kumaraswamy wept over the 'pain of coalition government' and shared how he 'swallowed the pain of this government.'

Kumaraswamy has cried on numerous occasions over the JD(S)-Congress coalition.

Nepotism and corruption

The former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda's son, Kumaraswamy fetched himself the tag of a '5-star chief minister' after reports surfaced that the chief minister of Karnataka was working out of a five-star hotel, next to his allotted official office in Bengaluru, for the past one year. 

He came under the scanner for his '5-star village stay' in drought-stricken villages, however, he remained defiant of his exorbitant lifestyle, further lashed out at the media and BJP for meddling in his 'personal activities.' However, it is still unknown as to who bore the cost of his opulent lifestyle

In retaliation to his 5-star lifestyle, Kumaraswamy boasted how he stayed at the Grand Kremlin Palace Russia while his father was the Prime Minister. 

The dragged drama of confidence vote    

The HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JDS coalition government fell on Tuesday after losing the trust vote which was finally allowed to happen, weeks after over a dozen coalition MLAs mass-resigned and resort-politics taking over. 

After rebel MLAs flew to Mumbai's Sofitel resort, amid resignation row with the fear of more party MLAs deserting the party, the JD(S) leadership had also taken the flock to a resort called Prestige Golfshire.

After all ministers from Congress and JD(S) resigned, MLAs from the JD(S), they were hidden away in the Golfshire Club in Devanahalli. On July 10, the MLAs could be seen enjoying a yoga session in the posh hotel.
