As self-styled godman Asaram got convicted of rape by the Jodhpur Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe court, a certain section of social media grabbed the opportunity to run a vile campaign against PM Narendra Modi. They accused him of having association with Asaram while sharing old pictures and videos of PM Modi with the rape convict.

Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan was also among those who tried to prove a link between Asaram and PM Narendra Modi. He even accused the Prime Minister of being the cause of Asaram’s massive popularity.

However, even as the Prime Minister had in a previous instance made it clear that he has no associations with Asaram anymore by asking BJP workers to not follow him, Bollywood star Farhan Akhtar has now come out in support of PM Modi, slamming those who are sharing images of Asaram with him.

Taking to Twitter, Farhan wrote, “So, Asaram is a child rapist. And he has been found guilty. Good. But can people please stop sharing images of him with PM Modi. Patronising him before he was exposed to be a pervert is no crime. Let’s be fair and give him the benefit of doubt that he, like us, did not know.”

Back in 2013, when PM Modi was Gujarat Chief Minister, had laid down ground rules, asking the party workers to not defend self-proclaimed godman Asaram as he had been accused of rape and an investigation against him was underway.

Asaram was convicted of rape on Wednesday, nearly five years after rape charges were levelled against him. The judgment was pronounced by Judge Madhusudan Sharma inside the Jodhpur Central Jail, where Asaram was lodged, for fear of possible violence similar to that took place in Panchkula following the conviction of another controversial self-proclaimed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a rape case last year.
