Subhasri death: AIADMK's Jayagopal sent to 14-day judicial custody

Exactly two weeks after AIADMK ex-councillor Jayagopal went absconding, the Chennai police finally tracked him down to Krishnagiri district, 290 kilometers from the state capital. After arrest, the Chennai police produced Jayagopal in front of the Alundur magistrate on Saturday morning, which sent him to 14-day judicial custody till October 11. 

Furthermore, the Alandur magistrate refused to remand the other four co-accused in the case, who were hired by Jayagopal to erect the banner. They were arrested by Chennai police earlier. Meanwhile, as per the police, Jayagopal’s brother-in-law Meghanathan, as well as the contractor who erected the illegal hoardings, are still absconding. Alandur magistrate pulled up the police for arresting the four labourers who were hired to put up the banners, asking the co-accused whether the labourers were aware that they are erecting illegal banners. The co-accused later revealed that the labourers were unaware of the nature of the task given to them after which the magistrate instructed the police to release them on bail.

On Friday evening, the Chennai police special team, which was formed to hunt the AIADMK ex-councillor, reportedly tracked his debit card usage to zero in on him at the Denkanikottai resort. He had used his card to pay for the food at the resort. 

Along the Thuraipakkam-Pallavaram radial road, hundreds of illegal flex banners and hoarding were erected for the wedding of AIADMK ex-councillor Jayagola’s son. The wedding was attended by several senior politicians of Tamil Nadu, including Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and several other ministers.

Illegal hoarding claims life

On September 12, one of the illegal hoardings which were erected for the wedding announcement, crashed on 23-year old Subhasri while she was riding her two-wheeler on the road. She lost balance and fell in front of a water tanker, which took her life. The driver of the tanker was immediately arrested following the tragic incident. 

While AIADMK ex-councillor Jayagopal had attempted to wash his hands off the incident initially, Chennai police, under immense pressure, added his name in the FIR, a day after the death of the young techie. Thereafter, he reportedly admitted himself at a private hospital and went absconding from there. His mobile phone has been switched off. Chennai Police had been under pressure and accusations of not carrying out the investigation promptly.
