The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and comprising of Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, on Monday, will begin hearing the petitions challenging the 2010 verdict of the Allahabad High Court in the disputed land of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya.

It comes on the wake of the SC's decision in September to refuse to refer this case to a larger bench. The court then, on September 27 had said the civil suit on land dispute would be heard by a three-judge bench starting October 29.

A couple of days before the apex court began its proceedings, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath urged the court to allow the construction of the Ram Mandir, while stating that the topmost court shouldn't discriminate in giving decisions.

“There should be no discrimination. If the Supreme Court can give its verdict on the Sabarimala Temple, then we appeal that a decision on the Ram Mandir should also be taken as soon as possible. This is best for peace in the country. Moreover, the issue of Ram Janmabhoomi is not about politics, it is about religious sentiments,” Yogi Adityanath said on Saturday during an event.

Earlier on October 25, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) had dared the Supreme Court on Ram Mandir issue, stating that the saints will not wait for the top court’s verdict in the case and the high-powered committee of the Hindu saints will impress upon the government to bring out a legislation for the construction of Ram Temple in the disputed land in Ayodhya as soon as possible.
