Supreme Court to hear arguments on National Herald case. LIVE updates here

The Supreme Court will hear final arguments on appeals filed by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald case on Tuesday.

Update at 1:10 PM: Supreme Court has allowed Income Tax Department to go ahead with the reassessment of the incomes of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Oscar Fernandes. The SC bench has said that the reassessment can take place but the assessment order would not be given effect until the next date of hearing which is January 8, 2019.

In the meantime I-T department will conduct the reassessment and pass the assessment order. 

Update at 1:00 PM: The hearing on National Herald case has begun.

Lawyer Kapil Sibal has sought protection for the Gandhis. SG Tushar Mehta has batted for the dismissal of Gandhi’s petition.


The Supreme Court will hear arguments on appeals filed by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald case on Tuesday. 

They have challenged the a Delhi High Court order, which had dismissed their pleas against the Income Tax which has decided to reopen the  their tax assessments for the financial year 2011-2012.

Subramanian Swamy had filed the National Herald case on November 1, 2012 against Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and four others including Vohra alleging land grab on the pretext of printing National Herald in several part of the country. The Congress party have denied the allegation. He has also alleged that the Gandhis and others he has mentioned in the case have committed a fraud of Rs 16 billion by acquiring a public limited company Associated Journals Limited (AJL) from Young Indian, and received land and publication rights of the paper
