Andhra Pradesh is on the brink of Assembly and Lok Sabha polls and this time social media is the turf being used for mudslinging. On Monday, January 14 YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's sister YS Sharmila lodged a complaint with Hyderabad police against websites and sections of social media which are spreading rumours against her, her family members and her party. Sharmila pointed out that in some of the Facebook posts and websites, she has been linked to actor and Baahubali protagonist Prabhas.
Sharmila met Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar and was accompanied by her husband Anil Kumar and senior party members including Sajjala Gopala Krishna Reddy, Vasireddy Padma and former MP YV Subba Reddy. In a written complaint, Sharmila sought criminal action against those distorting facts and spreading rumours of her alleged link up with actor Prabhas.
"I don't know who he (Prabhas) is and he hasn't met me. Neither have I any connections whatsoever," said Sharmila while speaking to the media after filing the complaint.
She was quick to blame the ruling TDP government in Andhra Pradesh for spinning the rumour mills.
"The TDP is making it a habit to propagate false news to make it sound true and they are doing the same thing against me. I am a daughter, mother, sister and woman with morals and to be tarnished with such cheap rumours where there is not an iota of truth, only shows the sadistic and degrading opinion these people have on women. Can they own up to such acts?," she questioned.
This is not the first time that Sharmila has been linked to Prabhas.
''Back in 2014 (ahead of polls) similar rumours about me having an affair with Prabhas were deliberately published. Once again this issue has come to light. Social media is being used to assassinate my character,'' she said.
Alleging that the TDP is using social media to propogate fake news against Jagan Mohan Reddy, Sharmila said, "The TDP on social media says that Jagan is an egoistic and arrogant person. If that is the case then how come his Praja Sankalpa Yatra was so successful and how could the people get so close to him and share their problems with him?"
Acting on the complaint, Hyderabad commissioner Anjani Kumar ordered the Cyber Cell team to immediately register a case and intensify its investigation to nab the culprits.
