The city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu has been put on high terror alert after information was received that six terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba have entered the state through Sri Lanka.

Tamil Nadu receives intel note

Coimbatore city Commissioner Sumit Sharan has confirmed that they are on alert after they received information about the movement of suspected terrorists. As per sources, a note from intelligence says that out of the six people, one is allegedly a Pakistani national named Illyas Anwar and others were Tamil Muslims from Sri Lanka who have reached Tamil Nadu illegally from Lankan waters. The note says they have disguised as Hindus wearing tilak/ vibhuti smeared on the foreheads. Coimbatore has been a place of conflict between the extreme right and left wing elements and also faced NIA raids recently after few men were suspected to have connections with the ISIS and to have radicalised and recruited youngsters to the group.

Details of measures taken by Coimbatore police

"Security has been beefed up in Coimbatore with the deployment of 2000 policemen in and around the city who are conducting vehicle checks in important points and ten quick reaction teams are also kept in standby in case of emergency," said the Coimbatore Commissioner Sharan. The vehicle checks are happening at many important places and the friskings are also happening in relevant places like airports, railway stations, malls and also bus stands where people gather. The Coimbatore top cop has also asked people not to panic since the things are under control now. Sources say a note was sent by the central intelligence to the Tamil Nadu DGP based on which the terror alert was given to the city.

Chennai under terror alert

Meanwhile, Chennai, Tamil Nadu's capital city is also put under terror alert after the warning from the intelligence agencies. Chennai city police commissioner AK Viswanathan while addressing the media said "Chennai police are on heightened alert to avoid any untoward incident. Storming operations are also in progress." A few regional media houses released the pictures of the terror suspects, stating that it was released by the police department. But the Coimbatore city commissioner denied those reports and clarified that the department didn't release the pictures of any suspects pertaining to this alert.
