In one of the major achievements of the government, Pakistan’s Masood, Chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed has been designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations. Members of the political fraternity have been expressing their joy over the news. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah gave the credit of the diplomatic victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Expressing his gratitude to PM Modi, Shah wrote that the reason India needs a strong and decisive leader. Calling the UN decision as ‘long overdue’, the BJP President stated that it symbolised PM’s commitment towards zero tolerance against terrorism.

Amit Shah took to Twitter and wrote, “That is why India needs a strong & decisive leader. Grateful to PM @narendramodi and his diplomatic efforts that led to the UN designating Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. It was long over due. This also reflects PM Modi's commitment towards Zero Tolerance against terrorism.” 

India’s Ambassador & Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Syed Akbaruddin had made the announcement on Twitter, “Big,small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list Grateful to all for their support. #Zerotolerance4Terrorism.” 

In a big win for India, owing to its diplomatic efforts, China has lifted its hold and Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar is designated as a global terrorist under the United Nations sanctions list.   

After China's withdrawal, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar is now blacklisted as a global terrorist. 

The founder of the terror outfit perpetrated the Pulwama terror attack that martyred 40 CRPF Jawans, following which India received massive global support, of countries like Russia, United States, United Kingdom, Israel, France and more.

China said on Tuesday that the vexed issue of designating Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN will be "properly resolved" but it did not give any timeline, days after Chinese President Xi Jinping met Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan here.  

China put a technical hold in March on a fresh proposal to impose a ban on the head of Pakistan-based JeM, it was for the fourth time that China blocked Azhar's listing as a global terrorist by the UN. 

After announcing Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist under the Sanctions Committee, the UN Nations Security Council released a statement detailing the sanction. 

UN announced that Mohammad Masood Azhar Alvi's sanction is in accordance with the paragraph 13 of resolution 1822 (2008) and subsequent related resolutions,  the ISIL (Da'esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee makes accessible a narrative summary of reasons for the listing individuals, groups, undertakings and entities included in the ISIL (Da'esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List.

Reason for listing: 

Mohammad Masood Azhar Alvi was listed on 1 May 2019 pursuant to paragraphs 2 and 4 of resolution 2368 (2017) as being associated with Al-Qaida for “participating in the financing, planning, facilitating, preparing, or perpetrating of acts or activities by, in conjunction with, under the name of, on behalf of, or in support of”, “supplying, selling or transferring arms and related material to”, “recruiting for”, “otherwise supporting acts or activities of”, and “other acts or activities indicating association with”
