The Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura has taken on the responsibility to unite regional parties to demand NRC for the entire northeastern region. After the exercise of NRC in Assam, the demand for the same has been voiced by the Indigenous Nationalist Party in Tripura. Jagadish Debbarma, the General Secretary of INPT, has stated that they would hold rallies at Khumulwng - the headquarters of Tripura tribal autonomous district council on September 24, to put across two major demands. He further stated the two demands as one, implementation of the NRC and two, withdrawal of the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Jagadish Debbarama further elucidating his stance on the NRC spoke of the need to impose it in the state of Tripura. He stated that he has been communicating with regional parties from other states. Leaders from mainstream regional political parties have also been invited to join the rally. The INTP has also moved to the Supreme Court in an attempt to get an order for the imposition of NRC in the state. In some states like Tripura, parties like INPT accept the year 1971 for detection and deportation of foreigners. In some other States, they have 1952 as the year for detection and deportation. INTP's plan, however, seems like an effort to replenish its base in the tribal areas ahead of elections. INTP is an ally of Congress. The alliance is said to continue in the upcoming elections.

The NRC came into being in 1951 under the purview of the Census Act, 1948. A process to update it was initiated in 2013. The process is aimed at differentiating between genuine Indian citizens from undocumented immigrants living in Assam. As per the terms of NRC, the residents have to prove that they or their ancestors had entered Assam before midnight on March 24, 1971.

However, those who find their names excluded will not be considered foreigners until they exhaust all their legal options.
