The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is a set of nationwide competitive examination in India. These Civil Services Examinations conducted by the UPSC are for the recruitment of several posts in the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service. The UPSC examination is conducted in three phases: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and also an interview for the candidate’s personality test.

The Prelims examination consists of two objective–type papers, i.e. General Studies Paper- I & II, also known as the Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT). The Main examination includes nine papers of conventional (essay) type, in which two papers are qualifying, and only marks of seven are calculated. The Personality Test interview is to test the personal suitability of the candidate for the post by an unbiased observer. As the interview standards are high, the candidate requires to prepare thoroughly with commitment. The below calendar shows the schedule for the UPSC exams in 2020.

The number of candidates who applied for the UPSC CSE (Prelims) 2019 were 8 Lakh, out of which 12000 were qualified for Civil Services (Mains) 2019.
