Vadodara Floods Update: IMD issues high alert for next 2 days, train cancellation list out

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high alert for Vadodara for the next two days. 

As per the IMD, the ongoing rescue operations may be affected due to the scheduled heavy showers. The officials at the IMD said:

"Heavy to very heavy rains very likely at isolated places in the districts of North Gujarat region namely Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Patan and Mehsana. Heavy rains very likely at isolated places in the districts of Gujarat region namely Vadodara, Anand, Kheda, Navsari, Valsad, and in Daman Dadra Nagar Haveli; in the districts of Saurashtra namely Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar."

Initially, the heavy rains and floods claimed over four lives in the city. Another dead body was recovered by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team while they conducted the rescue operations. This brings the death toll to five people. However, constant efforts are still being undertaken as the NDRF teams rescue more people with every hour that passes by. Earlier on Thursday, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani undertook a review meeting at the State Emergency Operations Center in Gandhinagar. The meeting was conducted with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Rupani said that officials have been instructed to make sure maximum efforts are being taken to counter the situation in the flooded city.

On July 31, Vadodara received heavy rainfall and recorded a historic 554 mm of rain in just 12 hours - this coming amid the state actually facing paucity of rains. The floods soon took over the city and reports of flooded homes started emerging. In addition, train services were affected with a number of them being cancelled and the airport having to be shut temporarily. After heavy rain lashed Vadodara, vehicles were seen driving through waterlogged roads and commuters were soon stuck in traffic jams.

Vadodara Floods: Citizens, Authorities And Even Dogs Battle Crocodiles From Vishwamitri River

Skymet reported that more than 100 people were rescued from the Vishwamitri River that passes through the city. The river water level is 10-feet above the extreme danger level. Another 30 to 40 people were stuck in waist-deep water in a housing society. Even so, reports suggest that the situation will likely improve.
