Visakhapatnam: Indo-Myanmar naval exercise 'IMNEX-19' commences

On Friday, the opening ceremony of the second edition of the India Myanmar Naval Exercise ‘IMNEX-19’ was conducted onboard INS Ranvijay at Visakhapatnam. The naval ships of Myanmar namely UMS Sin Phyu Shin (F-14) and UMS Tabinshweti (773) arrived at Visakhapatnam on this occasion. During this exercise, the Myanmar delegation would professionally engage with the personnel of the Indian Navy. Expertise in various maritime issues would be shared between the two navies.

Increased scope of the exercise

From the Indian side, INS Ranvijay, which is a guided-missile destroyer and INS Kuthar, a missile corvette would carry out a joint exercise with the aforesaid naval ships of Myanmar. It will encompass numerous operations including anti-air and surface firing exercises and flying exercises using integral helicopter and seamanship evolutions at sea. The scope of the joint exercises has increased in comparison to last year. The harbour phase of IMNEX-19 scheduled till October 20 includes visits to Indian naval units and the training and maintenance facility at Visakhapatnam. This would be followed by the sea phase, which is stipulated to last till October 22.

IMNEX-18

The first edition of IMNEX commenced on March 25, 2018. It took place in two phases with the harbour phase ending on March 30, followed by the sea phase which lasted till April 3. INS Sahyadri, corvette INS Kamorta, one Chetak helicopter, two Hawk Advanced jet trainer aircraft, and a submarine took part in this joint exercise. In the course of IMNEX-18, both navies engaged in practical demonstrations, fleet manoeuvres, gun firings as well as social interactions.
