A Delhi court on Saturday sent a woman associated with the 'Pinjra Tod' group, a collective of women students and alumni of colleges from across Delhi, to three days' police custody in a case associated with violence in old Delhi's Daryaganj area during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in December last year, said a lawyer.

The court sent JNU student Devangana Kalita to custody after the police said there was evidence against her alleged involvement in the December violence, her lawyer said. This is the third case under which Kalita has been arrested by the police, of which two are related to northeast Delhi riots. She was lodged in Mandoli jail in a separate case related to communal violence in northeast Delhi in February.

Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad was also arrested in the case for allegedly giving inflammatory speeches and later granted bail. Azad's outfit had called for a protest march from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar against the amended Citizenship Act on December 20, without police permission. Other 15 people arrested in the case were also granted bail by the court. There were violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act near Jama Masjid and Daryaganj area on December 20, during which people had pelted stones and torched vehicles. Many people including police officials were injured in the incident.
