In a setback to the Tamil nadu government's demands, Rajiv Gandhi assassination convict Nalini Sriharan has come out of prison on Thursday, after the Madras High Court granted her 30-day parole to make arrangements for her daughter's wedding

The longest-serving woman prisoner in the country, who is in the jail since 1991, for over 28 years, Nalini Sriharan, was convicted in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. She walked out of the Vellore central prison on Friday.

Nalini Sriharan had filed a petition at Madras HC three months ago seeking 6 months of parole, mentioning her long jail term. But the state government strongly opposed parole to Nalini, mentioning the security reasons.

Nalini Sriharan's Right To Appear In Person To Argue Plea Cannot Be Denied: Madras High Court

Nalini had also filed a plea to appear in person and argue in the matter for which the state government opposed. Later, the Madras high court ordered the prison department to bring Nalini Sriharan to the Madras High Court to argue her own case. After hearing all the arguments, Nalini Sriharan was granted 30-day parole by the court with various conditions.

Nalini Sriharan who walked out of the prison will stay in Vellore district and only her relatives can meet her. There will be 24x7 police security and at least 15 policewomen will be deployed where she is staying.

She is not allowed to travel anywhere outside Vellore and has to take permission from the prison authorities if the travel is required for which the police force will accompany her. Politicians and journalists are not allowed to meet Nalini during these 30 days, time since its a sensational case, which can also initiate political discourse and change the situation. Her parole will be cancelled immediately if she violates any of these conditions according to the court's order.
