In the third such reported instance from UP in six months, a man hailing from Kannauj has given triple talaq to his wife over the phone for failing to provide him with a son.

The woman who has two daughters has been married for 10 years. Her husband, who was unhappy for not having a son, had gone to Saudi Arabia to seek a job, as per reports.

The woman has filed a police complaint in Kannauj alleging that her husband has pronounced ‘triple talaq’ over the phone from Saudi Arabia.

She has said,” I want justice and an action taken against my husband.”

As per the complainant’s statements, her in-laws too have supported her husband and asked her to leave the house.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Kannauj Vinod Kumar has spoken to the media, saying:

“On receiving a complaint from the victim, a case has been registered against her husband and her in-laws. We are probing the matter.”

On a continuing trend, two months ago, on 30 January, UP man from Aliganj, Etah had given ‘triple talaq’ to his wife over the phone for reaching home 10 minutes late. This incident had occurred barely a few weeks after the Lok Sabha had passed the bill criminalising instant talaq.

The victim had been visiting her ailing grandmother and returned home 10 minutes later than the stipulated half an hour granted by her husband. Ajay Bhadauriya, Area Officer Aliganj had assured her that a thorough investigation would be done.

On 27 December 2018, the Lok Sabha has passed the Triple Talaq bill also known as Protection of Rights on Marriage, making the practice a criminal offence with a provision of three-year jail term for the husband. It has been pending in the Rajya Sabha since its passage in the Lok Sabha, as the opposition which keeps stalling it stating that the bill needs further scrutiny.
