The Supreme Court will take up the Babri Masjid case on January 4, 2019.

On fourth of January, the court will decide the bench which will hear the case.

The title suit case hearing was postponed by the apex court in October much to the anguish of political parties. With the elections to be held in May 2019, several parties including the BJP had lamented the postponement of the hearing.

The land dispute case is turning out to be a major political agenda, with Shiv Sena and groups like RSS and the VHP demanding a law or an ordinance to be passed to allow the construction of the Ram Mandir at the disputed site.

The Shiv Sena has been attacking the BJP over the delay to fulfil its poll promise to construct the Ram Mandir.

The Supreme Court on October had adjourned the matter and ordered it to be listed in the first week of January for fixing a date for hearing.

The three-judge bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi has decided the matter will be taken up in the first week of 2019, and it will then pronounce when the hearing on the case will begin. Despite the Centre's plea to take up the case after Diwali break, the apex court stated that no urgent date can be given as of now due to other priorities.

It may come as a setback to those who were hoping for construction of Ram temple to start before 2019. Ever since the the SC, then headed by CJI Dipak Misra, pronounced in September that the matter would not be referred to a larger bench, a number of individuals and groups upped the ante to build the Ram Mandir on Ram Janmabhoomi.
