17 Opposition MPs write to VP Naidu on 'concern over quick passage' of bills by govt without committee scrutiny

Countering the quick passage of legislation by both houses of Parliament, 17 Opposition MPs have written to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, M Venkaiah Naidu raising concerns over the manner in which the Government is hurriedly passing legislation without any scrutiny by Parliamentary Standing or Select Committees

Countering the quick passage of legislation by both houses of Parliament, 17 Opposition MPs, on Friday, have written to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, M Venkaiah Naidu raising concerns over the manner in which the Government is hurriedly passing legislation without any scrutiny by Parliamentary Standing or Select Committees.

All MPs who have signed the letter belong from 16 different Opposition parties Congress, Trinamool, SP, DMK, CPI(M), NCP, RJD, BSP, TDP, AAP, CPI, PDP, IUML, JD(S), TRS, KCM, and MDMK.

Parliament productivity at 20-year high

The current Budget Session of the 17th Lok Sabha(LS) has been working overtime hitting a 20-year high of 128% while the Rajya Sabha (RS) too has a productivity of 95% as of Friday, according to think tank PRS Legislative Research.

With such high productivity, the Central government is mulling to extend the ongoing Parliament session till August 6, according to PTI. The current budget session which began on June 17 was originally set to conclude on July 26.

What makes this Budget Session so productive?

According to PRS, 33 new bills have been introduced in the Parliament - 29 in the Lok Sabha, 4 in Rajya Sabha. Out of 33 bills introduced, 12 have already been passed in both parliamentary houses as of July 26, while 17 have been passed in Lok Sabha only and 3 in Rajya Sabha.

Here are the bills passed (both LS and RS):

  • The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Bill, 2019
  • The Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The Dentists (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The National Investigation Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2019
  • The New Delhi International Arbitration Centre Bill, 2019
  • The Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2019
