AICC General Secretary Harish Rawat resigns, a day after Rahul Gandhi tweets his resignation

 A day after Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of the party president, AICC General Secretary Harish Rawat resigned from the post, saying that he is doing so taking responsibility of poll defeat. This comes after a day-long drama following Rahul Gandhi's resignation where the party leaders said that they will urge him to remain the leader. As per Congress' rulebook, Rahul Gandhi will continue to be the president of the party till the time working committee members accepts her resignation. 

Months after this internal conflict, following the Congress being decimated in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi declared in the CWC meeting that he will resign owning the poll debacle. The entire party leadership had then rejected the his resignation saying he was the only one who could take the party forward, in what was deemed a drama. However, on July 3, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi declared that he will no more be the party president.

Tweeting his resignation letter, he had said that it was an honour for him to serve the Congress Party. He had added that the values and ideals of the Congress party has served as 'lifeblood of the nation'. In his letter he added that he has fought against the saffron party with utmost dedication and force. Here is his resignation letter:

After the Lok Sabha election debacle where the Congress party won 52 seats compared to BJP's 303, more than 10 state chiefs has resigned owing to the failure. However, the leaders of the party do not want Rahul Gandhi to resign.

Kamal Nath - Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and MP Congress committee president Kamal Nath on May 25 offered to resign from the post of Congress state unit chief

Raj Babbar - Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president sent his resignation to Rahul Gandhi and tweeted that he is taking the responsibility of the defeat

Ashok Chavan - Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ashok Chavan who himself lost the elections from Nanded, Maharashtra offered to resign on May 26

Niranjan Patnaik - Odisha Congress chief sent his resignation a day after the defeat on May 24

Sunil Jakhar - Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar on May 27 also offered to resign from his post
