While the action against Samajwadi Party MP Azam Khan for making crude, sexist remarks against BJP's Rama Devi was not exemplary, the women MPs were a paragon of strength as they spoke and fought to be not drowned out by those trying to quieten them.

Women lawmakers from across the political parties spoke in one voice condemning Khan's conduct in the House. Everyone from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to the newest MP Mahua Mitra spoke against Khan.

The demand that a member of Parliament in the House must be treated with respect irrespective of gender was clearly presented. The women also stood together in solidarity with Rama Devi saying that such behaviour will no longer be tolerated.

If a picture was worth a thousand words, the image below displays women leaders coming together for Rama Devi.

Standing together are BJP MP from Chandigarh Kirron Kher, Apna Dal MP Anupriya Patel, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi from Delhi, NCP MP from Baramati Supriya Sule with Devi herself.

BJP MPs Smriti Irani and Nirmala Sitharaman though not present in the picture took the lead in demand for exemplary action against Khan.

The Minister of Women and Child Development cited the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Bill and urged all the Members of Parliament to stand united in condemning the 'Aankho Mein Aankh' sexist remark made by Azam Khan at Rama Devi.

Calling the conduct by Khan a 'blot' on the Parliament, she implored the members to call for action against the Rampur MP. "We cannot sit quiet watch in peace," she said.

"I appeal the entire house to send the message that a woman can be from any party, the privilege of the House will not be misused to insult a woman. Leave all political differences, gender differences and say in one voice that you cannot misbehave with a woman and get away with it," she said.

Finance Minister tried to expose those who did not take a position on the matter. However, a hard battle lay ahead of her as she pointed at those who she believed 'hesitated' and supported action against Khan conditionally. Congress MPs (all men) arose and created a ruckus and tried to drown her voice. However, the former Defence Minister refused to be silenced.
