J&K's Article 370 to be revoked: BSP, AAP, BJD, YSRCP among parties supporting BJP-led Modi govt's move

On Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah moved a proposal to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and to bifurcate the state into Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Update: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu supports Centre's decision to revoke Article 370


On Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah moved a proposal to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and to bifurcate the state into Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. While most of the parties in the Opposition created a ruckus in objection to the proposal, certain traditional rivals of BJP and neutral parties, as well as the party's allies in the NDA, extended their support.

Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party supported the move by the Centre. An MLA from the party Rrajendra Guda praised PM Modi for the decision the Article 370.

Aam Aadmi Party also stood behind the government. Party convener and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "We support the government on its decisions on J & K. We hope this will bring peace and development in the state."

Biju Janata Dal led by Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik also stood by the Modi-led government. Its MP Prasanna Acharya spoke in the Rajya Sabha saying his party backs the resolution. "In a real sense today, Jammu and Kashmir has become a part of India. My party supports this resolution. We are a regional party but for us nation is first.

A Navaneethakrishnan an MP from AIADMK in Rajya Sabha also said that the party's former late chief Jayalalithaa would stand up for the nation's sovereignty and integrity. "Amma is well known for upholding sovereignty and integrity. So, AIADMK party supports the two resolutions, Reorganisation Bill & the Reservation Bill."

YSRCP also said that it supports the abolition of article 370 and said 'hats off to Amit Shah and Modi'.

BJP's ally in Maharashtra Shiv Sena welcomed the proposals. Its leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut said, "Removing Article 370 is like killing Bhasmasur, its like killing a demon. Removing Article 370 not only makes the country happy but Veer Savarkar, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Balasaheb (Thackeray) would have been also been happy.

What is Article 35 A?

Incorporated in the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential order, Article 35 A defines the permanent residents of the state of Jammu and Kashmir by giving special rights and privileges to the state subjects. It stems from Article 370 that gives autonomous right to Jammu and Kashmir. The article is also referred to as Permanent Residents Law and bars woman belonging to the state from any property rights if she marries a person from outside the state. Even the children of such women do not get the right as they do not have any succession rights over the property.

What is Article 370?

​It exempts Jammu and Kashmir from following the Indian Constitution except for Article 1 and itself. It also restricts Parliament's legislative powers in Jammu and Kashmir. It was passed in the Constituent Assembly on May 27, 1949 and is the first article of Part XXI of the Indian Constitution. The heading of this part is ‘Temporary, Transitional and Special Provisions’
