Veteran BJP politician Lal Krishna Advani celebrates his 91st birthday on Thursday. Advani was one of one of the co-founders of the Jan Sangh party which is a precursor of the BJP. He also was the minister of Home Affairs in the ruling NDA coalition from 1998-2004, and also served as the seventh Deputy Prime Minister of India, in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government between 2002-2004.

Here are nine famous quotes by the former Deputy Prime Minister:

Advani said that former PM Vajpayee's speeches gave him an inferiority complex:

"I had told Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the early 1970s that I had developed an inferiority complex due to his speeches," Advani said in 2011 at an event organised to mark his 85th birthday. He added: "I tell the same to Sushma Swaraj [the current external affairs minister] also. I really mean it."

He said that he felt shy about speaking in public and always wanted to stay from giving public speeches. He even turned down the offer of being the president of the Jan Sangh, the party which would then turn into BJP, thinking he would not be able to address public gatherings. "I was in awe of Atal ji, and earlier felt that if politicians spoke so well, then I would not be able to make it," he said.

'Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a pioneer of a stable non-Congress coalition government'

"Atalji will be remembered as the pioneer of the first-ever stable non-Congress coalition government at the Centre and I had the privilege of working as his deputy for six years," he said in a statement following the former Prime Minister's demise.

Praise for PM Narendra Modi on the second anniversary of the government at Centre

"India has received an honest government at Centre under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government is determined to fulfil all its promises and it is moving in the right direction to do so," he said at the festival of 'Vikas Parv' as the member of the Margdarshak Mandal

LK Advani spoke about the Emergency ahead of its 40th anniversary

"The Partition was British guilt. The Emergency is ours," said LK Advani to a daily.

'I don’t think anything has been done that gives me the assurance that civil liberties will not be suspended or destroyed again. Not at all,' said LK Advani when questioned about whether the Emergency could happen again

'The aftermath of the Emergency having been an election in which the party that imposed the Emergency lost very badly would always be a deterrent for future rulers who think of repeating what was done in the 1970s,' said he said warning leaders about creating an Emergency like atmosphere.

Advani speaks about the shortcomings in Indian politics

'I do not see any sign in our polity that assures me, any outstanding aspect of leadership. A commitment to democracy and to all other aspects related to democracy is lacking,' he said in an interview to the Indian Express when asked about what is lacking in India's polity.
