Reacting to the same, Former Minister of External Affairs in the UPA Salman Khurshid said, "It is very sad. All I can say is that he put in enormous effort to a point where we all thought that he had caught the pulse and that we would see a major coming back of the Congress".

Calling Gandhi's resignation, 'unfortunate', he said, "It is sad because he feels that he should leave, but all party members strongly feel that he should not."

Khurshid went on to make a big statement confirming that despite the resignation, Rahul Gandhi as well as Sonia Gandhi will have a big place in the party, saying, "But in my mind, although he has left the office, and he is not in charge anymore, but there is a natural standing, that he and Sonia Gandhi will continue to have. Whatever new arrangement has been made for the new Congress President, I believe will have the same feelings as I have. This is his decision, if he has taken the final call then we will have to understand and follow it. But we were still hoping that we could persuade him to not resign. And now, we now party members and senior party leaders are going to put our heads together and make the best of these circumstances."
