In a massive development following the Congress party's failure in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has been elected as the leader of Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP).

Communications In-charge of the Congress party Randeep Singh Surjewala took to Twitter and made the announcement. In the tweet, he also thanked the 12.13 crore voters who reposed their faith in the party during the elections. Take a look:

During the meeting, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, and Gulam Nabi Azad can be seen seated along with other party leaders, while Sonia Gandhi is seen on the podium addressing the party workers, in the visuals shared by the party spokesperson. The meeting was attended by the party's 52 newly elected Lok Sabha MPs and Rajya Sabha members who met to elect the party's new CPP chief, a position which was previously held by Sonia Gandhi.

In another tweet posted by Randeep Surjewala, Congress president Rahul Gandhi thanked the voters and the party workers.

"Every Congress member must remember that each one of you is fighting for the Constitution, for every person in India irrespective of the color of his skin or belief," said Rahul Gandhi.
