1 Killed, 42 Rescued After Massive Fire Breaks Out in Girls PG in Pune's Shanipar

A watchman perished and over 40 female students were rescued following a fire outbreak at a hostel in the Shanipar district of Pune city, Maharashtra.

Pune: In a tragic fire incident that occurred on Thursday, June 6, at a girls' PG accomodation in Pune's Shanipar area. In the accident, one death was reported while 42 others were rescued.

The incident occurred around 1.30 am, said Pune Municipal Corporation's chief fire officer Devendra Potphode.

"The fire brigade received a call about the fire in a five-storey building. After our team reached the spot, it was found that the blaze had erupted at an accounting academy on the ground floor," Potphode said.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-1) Sandip Singh Gill, the deceased has been identified as the building's watchman, who was found in a room on the ground floor.

"After he was found there, he was referred to the Sassoon General Hospital, but was declared dead by doctors," he said.

Upon receiving the information, the fire department reached the spot and assisted the situation. Forty-Two girls residing on the second floor of the building were successfully rescued and fire was brought under control later.

However, no further casualty or injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire remains unclear and an investigation is underway.
