Bengaluru: Seven people including a managing director of a nursing college, a nurse, a tattoo artist and an autorickshaw driver were arrested after the Karnataka Police busted gang selling babies in the state's Tumakuru district, as per media reports.
Meanwhile, the police rescued five out of nine babies sold by the gang for about Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh, according to the reports.
As per media reports, the police sources claimed that the gang used to look for childless couples to sell babaies. It used to target unmarried mothers or women who got pregnant following extramarital affairs.
The gang allegedly took the pregnant women to a hospital, made fake birth certificates once the babies were born, and then sold them.
The incident came to light after a couple approached the police on June 9 to report the loss of their 11-month-old baby while they were sleeping near a temple. A special team of police went in search of the baby and arrested the tatoo artist identified as K N Ramakrishnappa and Hanumatharaju a resident of Tumakuru town.
On interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that gand sold many children to childless couples. According to the police, it is anticipated that the gang may be part of a bigger racket.
