Latina: A 30-year-old Indian farm worker died after being abandoned on the side of a road in Italy's Latina, following an accident on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Satnam Singh, severed his arm in the accident. The news was confirmed by the Indian embassy in Italy.

"The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance," the embassy said in its post on X.

Italy condemns the ‘act of barbarity’ 

Italy's Labour Minister also condemned this "act of barbarity."

Labour Minister Marina Calderone addressed the parliament, describing the incident as "a true act of barbarity" and expressing her hope that those responsible would face consequences for their actions. The authorities are currently investigating the matter. 

How did the incident occur?

As per the statement released by Flai CGIL trade union, Satnam Singh was cutting hay when his arm sliced off  in a machine. The trade union further said, "Instead of being helped by his employers Singh was dumped like a bag of rubbish near his home."

Singh was working on a farm in the area, which is known for its significant population of Indian migrant workers.

The police was reportedly informed about the incident by Satnam's wife and friends, following which an air ambulance was sent to the Indian National's residence.

"Satnam Singh was flown to a hospital in Rome but he died on Wednesday around midday," said a police spokesman.

Italy's centre-left Democratic Party condemns the incident

Condeming the barbaric act, Italy's centre-left Democratic Party stated that the treatment with the Indian national was a "defeat for civilisation".

"The fight against gangmasters and for dignified and human living and working conditions must continue to be out priority," said the Italy's party in an X post.
