After Punjab, Telangana Follows Suit, Makes Telugu Compulsory in All Schools

After Tamil Nadu and Punjab, Telangana has also made it compulsory for students from class 1-10 to learn the state's local language compulsory 'Telugu'.

Hyderabad: Congress -led Telangana government on Wednesday ordered to implement Telugu as compulsory subject in all the schools in the state. After Tamil Nadu and Punjab , now the Revanth Reddy government has also followed the suit, making Telugu compulsory in all CBSE , ICSE, IB and other board-affiliated schools in Telangana.

Making Telugu compulsory in schools, the Telangana government in order stated, “Replacement of singidi (standard telugu) with vennela (simple telugu) with code (089) as per the cbse subject list (language group -l) for class IX from the A.Y. 2025-26 and for the X class from the A.Y. 2026-2027.”

The government further asked the Director of School Education to take all the necessary actions to implement the learning of Telugu language in all the schools in the state.

Compulsory Telugu teaching act first introduced in 2018 

In 2018, the then BRS-led government in the state had brought Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act to make the state's local language compulsory in government Zilla Parishad, mandal parishad, government funded and other schools affiliated to CBSE, ICSE, IB. But the government didn't implement the act due to various reasons.

The Congress-led government under the leadership of CM Revanth Reddy took steps forward in making Telugu mandatory in government as well as CBSE, ICSE and IB schools from class 9 and 10, a government release said

Govt to introduce ‘Simple Telugu’ textbooks for easy learning

The government will introduce ‘Simple Telugu’ textbooks called 'Vennela' for easily learning of the language and conducting exams to make it easy for the students.

Simple Telugu textbook will make it easy for the students to learn and understand the language whose mother tongue is not Telugu.

According to the government order, Telugu will be taught from class 1 to 10 from the 2025-26 academic year in schools under CBSE, ICSE, IB and other boards.
