New Delhi: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ramji Lal Suman sparked a major political controversy after calling Rajput king Rana Sanga a "traitor" during a discussion in Parliament. His remarks triggered a sharp backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) and Rajput community leaders, who condemned the statement as an "insult to history and Hindu society."

Suman’s Statement in Parliament

During a debate on the Home Ministry, Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman countered BJP’s claims about the lineage of Indian Muslims. He said:

"BJP leaders often claim that Muslims have the DNA of Babur. But Indian Muslims do not consider Babur their ideal. In fact, who brought Babur to India? It was Rana Sanga who invited him to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. By that logic, if you claim Muslims are the descendants of Babur, then you are also the descendants of Rana Sanga—a traitor. We criticize Babur, but not Rana Sanga."

His remarks immediately ignited a political storm, with BJP leaders demanding an apology from the SP for "insulting the Rajput warrior."

BJP Leaders Slam Suman

Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize the statement. He wrote, "Who brought Babur? Rana Sanga brought Babur to defeat Ibrahim Lodi. So Muslims are the descendants of Babur. You are the descendants of the traitor Rana Sanga. Crossing all limits of appeasement, SP MP Ramji Lal called the great warrior Rana Sanga a traitor. This is a grave insult to the Rajputs and the entire Hindu society."

Former BJP MP Sanjeev Balyan also slammed Suman, calling the remarks an attempt to appease a particular community.

"Shame on you—crossing all limits of appeasement. Calling the great warrior Rana Sanga a traitor in Parliament is a grave insult to the Rajput community and the entire Hindu society," Balyan said, sharing a video clip of Suman’s speech on social media.

He further demanded an apology from the Samajwadi Party for the statement.

Manoj Tiwari and PP Chaudhary Join Criticism

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari accused Suman of attempting to glorify controversial historical figures while insulting India’s warriors.

"Some people are trying to make Aurangzeb a hero. Such people should be identified. He was an enemy of the country. We have never said that Muslims are the descendants of Babur. The Muslims of this country are ours," Tiwari said.

BJP MP PP Chaudhary termed the comments "unacceptable and condemnable."

"The Samajwadi Party MP's comment on Mewar’s brave warrior has insulted our history. Such words in the sacred temple of democracy are highly condemnable and unacceptable," Chaudhary said.

Who Was Rana Sanga?

Rana Sanga, from the Sisodia dynasty, ruled Mewar from 1508 to 1528 and is known for uniting Rajput clans against the Delhi Sultanate. His kingdom spanned parts of Rajasthan , Gujarat , and Madhya Pradesh , with Chittor as his capital.

He is widely remembered for his valiant resistance against foreign invaders, including Babur, who invaded India in 1526 and established the Mughal Empire after defeating Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat.
