New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will review preparedness to deal with floods on Sunday, that affect various parts of the country during the monsoon.
"The home minister will chair a high-level meeting here on Sunday to review overall preparedness for flood management in the country," a home ministry official said.
Every year, large areas of Bihar, Assam and other eastern states are inundated due to a rise in the water level of various rivers due to monsoon rains.
Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and a few other states also encounter landslides and other rain-related issues during the monsoon.
Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Jammu and Kashmir have also seen floods in recent years.
Currently, Assam is facing floods with around 3.90 lakh people affected in 19 districts, officials said. The Kopili and Kushiyara rivers continue to flow above the danger level at Dharamtul and Karimganj, respectively. Districts like - Barpeta, Kamrup, Bajali, Goalpara, Nagaon, Hojai, Udalguri, Karimganj, Darrang, Nalbari, Kamrup Metropolitan, and Cachar have been affected.
Karimganj continued to be the worst-hit district, with 1,39,989 people are still affected, followed by Darrang, with the a toatal affected population of 56,863 people.
Cropland of 3,995.33 hectares is still under flood waters, while 2,20,546 animals, including 47,795 poultry, remain affected. More than 134 relief camps have been set up, sheltering 17,661 persons, while another 94 relief distribution centres are also functional in the State.
The death toll in this year's flood, landslides and storm has reached 37, while one person is missing, they said.
