Guwahati: In a major relief to commuters in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Elevated South Bank Corridor of Guwahati - North Guwahati bridge will be dedicated to the public on Monday, March 4, 2024. 

The section built at a cost of Rs 326 crore will ease connectivity between Bhoothnath and Machkhowa and vice versa by diverting traffic over Brahmaputra river.

Taking to X, Sarma said, "Decongesting Guwahati ! Tomorrow, the Elevated South Bank Corridor of the Guwahati - North Guwahati bridge will be dedicated to the public. This ₹326cr arm will ease connectivity between Bhootnath to Machkhowa and vice versa by diverting traffic over the river. First look. "

Current Status of Guwahati - North Guwahati bridge

  • The major corridor of Guwahati - North Guwahati bridge Elevated South Bank Corridor will get opened on Monday, March 4, 2024.
  • A part of the Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge which will connect Sonaram Field to Machkhowa bypassing Bhootnath point. 
  • According to the Chief Minister, the corridor will decongest the traffic  observed near Bharalumukh. 
  • Earlier on December 19, Sarma took to microblogging site to announce that ambitious Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge over the Brahmaputra River has achieved nearly 80 per cent completion.
  • The six-lane bridge-cum-road project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Guwahati. According to Sarma, the project, spanning across the Brahmaputra to connect Guwahati and North Guwahati, is on track to be completed by Diwali 2024.
  • The 8.4 km bridge, a major infrastructure development is being constructed at a cost of Rs 2,608 crore.
  • The bridge's main span is intended to be 1.24 kilometers long. After commuters from Guwahati cross the bridge, the road splits into six lanes and continues all the way to Gauripur.
  • This under-construction bridge will significantly decrease the distance between Guwahati city with AIIMS and IIT, both situated on the north bank and will also ease the traffic woes. (With inputs from ANI)
