Auditor of the collapsed CST bridge, Neeraj Desai arrested by Mumbai Police

Neeraj Desai, an auditor who had conducted an audit of the CST bridge in Mumbai that collapsed on March 14 has been arrested for the horrific incident that resulted in six people losing their lives and several suffering.

The accused auditor will be produced in the Killa Court on Tuesday. 

DCP Abhishek Trimukhe said that CP Sanjay Barve is personally looking into the case and arrested Desai under IPC 304(2)

He said, "After an initial investigation, we have come to know that experts ho had done structural audit knew that such an incident could happen. We have added IPC 304(2) in this case. We have arrested Neeraj Desai, he had done the audit of the bridge"

The cops had filed an FIR against unknown officials of the BMC and railways hours after the tragic incident took place and summoned the BMC officials and bridge auditor for inquiry on Saturday.

On Friday, Republic TV accessed the official July 2018 audit report of the foot overbridge which collapsed on March 14. The report enlisted a number of recommendations for the 'unstable bridge' unraveling the truth behind the negligence of the civic body and the Maharashtra government.

The report divulged into crucial details:

• The report states the slab of the bridge was not in good condition, steel in the slab was exposed
• It mentioned that all broken treads and risers of the collapsed bridge needed replacement.
• Measures such as maintenance of RC parapet and railings for anti-corrosion were required.
• The foundation was not exposed and also the foundation plans were not available hence no concrete conclusion can be drawn regarding the safety and condition of the foundation. 
• It further said that the parapets were in precarious condition. 
• Floor beam near support was heavily corroded.

60% of the bridge had collapsed when the incident took place. The authorities cleared much of the remaining part of the bridge late on Thursday and early on Friday, and on Saturday, bridge was completely dismantled.

State cops announced that the complete bridge has now been taken down, and that the are is now open for traffic. This development was informed on Twitter by the Mumbai police.
