Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday dedicated the foundation day of the party's student wing, Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), to the Kolkata rape-murder victim. Expressing deep grief and solidarity with the family of the trainee doctor who tragically lost her life at RG Kar Hospital, CM Banerjee announced in a post on X that the TMCP foundation day would be dedicated to her memory.

“Today, on the foundation day of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, I dedicate this occasion to our sister, whom we tragically lost a few days ago at RG Kar Hospital. Expressing my deepest condolences to the family of our sister who was brutally assaulted and killed at RG Kar, I demand swift justice for that incident. We also extend our heartfelt sorrow for all women across India, of all ages, who have been victims of inhuman acts,” Banerjee wrote in Bengali.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the significant social responsibility of students and youth in shaping society. She emphasised their role in inspiring and awakening the community, calling on them to commit to the vision of a brighter future.

“Students and youth have a great social role,” Banerjee said. “Their duty is to awaken society and culture, inspire everyone around them with the bright promise of a new day, and gift society with dreams of a better future. On this day, I urge all of you to be inspired and committed to this effort."

“To my student friends, stay well, stay healthy, and remain dedicated to your resolve for a bright future,” the chief minister added.

The rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor on August 9 has sparked nationwide outrage, leading junior doctors across the country to refuse to see non-emergency patients. They are demanding justice for the victim and increased safety measures for women in hospitals.

Banerjee's post comes a day after protests were held by an unregistered student group claiming to be 'Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj' and a dissident state government employees' platform 'Sangrami Joutha Mancha,' both of which demanded her resignation.

The protest march to the state secretariat, "Nabanna Abhijan," was marked by intense anger that could not be subdued by police batons or tear gas.

The ruling Trinamool Congress claimed that the march was supported by the opposition BJP, which has called for a 12-hour "Bengal bandh" today in protest against the police action.
