Kolkata: Following the violence unleashed on the Nabanna Abhijan protestors by Calcutta Police, BJP has called for a Bengal Bandh today, on August 28.

The 12-hour Bangla bandh will continue from 6 am to 6 pm today; from schools to banks - check what's open and what's closed.

Bengal Bandh Today: Timings

The Nabanna Protest led by students in Kolkata, demanding the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee, turned violent after Mamata cops attacked the peaceful protestors with lathi charge, water cannons and tear gas shells.

Hundreds have been arrested and following this violence by the cops on the protestors, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) have called for a 12-hour Bengal Bandh from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Sukanta Majumdar, the Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President said on Tuesday, “West Bengal BJP calls a 12-hour West Bengal bandh tomorrow.”

The BJP also demanded presidential rule and accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of being responsible for the violence during the student protests earlier in the day.

Bengal Bandh Today: Schools Closed?

While the Bhartiya Janata Party has called for a 12-hour bandh from 6am to 6m today, the state government has said that schools will not be affected by this bandh.

All government schools and offices will remain during the Bengal Bandh; students of private schools must check for updates from their institutions but overall, schools remain open.

Bengal Bandh Today: Banks Closed?

Since the Bengal Bandh has been called for by the opposition party and the state government, i.e. the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has not approved of it, all banks in the city will also remain open during the protest today.

Bengal Bandh: What's Open, What's Closed

As mentioned earlier, the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government strongly stands against the Bandh and has been opposing it.

This is why the state government has said that government offices, schools, colleges and banks among other institutions will function normally, despite the bandh.

Public transport and markets in the state may be affected due to the protests.
