Varanasi (U.P.): Doctors at Sri Sundarlal Hospital in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have successfully removed a 25 paise coin from a 40-year-old patient's windpipe.

The coin had been lying in the trachea, the main passage for air, for a shocking eight years.

A team of cardio-thoracic surgeons led by Prof. Siddharth Lakhotia and Prof. SK Mathur performed the complex surgery. The procedure, which lasted only 20 minutes, utilized an advanced rigid bronchoscope to safely extract the coin.

The presence of a foreign object in an adult's windpipe is uncommon due to the body's natural cough reflex. This case highlights the rarity of the situation, especially considering the eight-year duration the coin remained lodged.

According to Dr. Siddharth, foreign objects in the windpipe can pose life-threatening risks. They can cause choking, pneumonia, or even lung collapse if left unattended.

Interestingly, this wasn't the first time the BHU team tackled such a case. Prof. Lakhotia revealed a previous successful surgery where a team of doctors removed a key from a patient's trachea after ten years.

While this surgery had a successful outcome, it emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. If you experience persistent breathing difficulties, unexplained coughing, or other respiratory issues, consult a doctor immediately.
