At a time when the #MeToo campaign is gaining momentum in India with victims of harassment revealing the true face of sexual predators on social media, a BJP MP has questioned the movement. BJP MP Udit Raj, while calling the movement a ‘wrong practice’, has said that because of the campaign people’s reputations can be ruined.

The BJP leader also indirectly questioned Tanushree Dutta’s accusations of sexual misconduct on veteran actor Nana Patekar, saying, “What is the use of accusing a person of sexual misconduct when the incident happened 10 years ago? How will the veracity of such claims be proven after so many years? If the accusations turn out to be false, it will damage the reputation of the person who is falsely accused. It’s a start of a ‘galat pratha’ (wrong practice).”

Tanushree Dutta’s allegations on Nana Patekar took the whole country, specially Bollywood, by storm. Dutta accused Nana Patekar of misconduct on the sets of ‘Horn Ok Pleassss’  during the shoot of a song sequence ten years ago. Tanushree Dutta also accused director Vivek Agnihotri of allegedly asking her to strip and give cues to actor Irrfan Khan on the sets of 2005 film ‘Chocolate’.

While most of the celebrities, political leaders and common folk supported Tanushree Dutta for speaking up, there were a few who chose to support Nana Patekar. However, despite the contradictory voices on the issue, it has started a campaign on social media with victims of sexual violence outing sexual predators, especially men in power.

Filmmaker Vikas Bahl, actor-filmmaker Rajat Kapoor, AIB’s Gursimran Khamba and actor Alok Nath are among a men who have been accused of sexual misconduct.
