In a closely watched election, Rajib Bhattacharjee, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee, secured a victory in Tripura's lone Rajya Sabha seat on Tuesday. Bhattacharjee, who is also the state unit president of the BJP, won by a margin of 37 votes.

Out of the 60-member assembly, Bhattacharjee garnered the support of 47 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), while the CPI(M) candidate Sudhan Das received 10 votes. The Congress, which holds three seats in the assembly, chose to abstain from voting.

"Bhattacharjee, as expected, won the Rajya Sabha seat as all the MLAs from the ruling alliance voted for him," stated Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul to PTI.

Following his victory, Bhattacharjee expressed his gratitude to the legislators who supported him. "I am thankful to all those MLAs who have supported me in the election and also extend special thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national president for keeping faith in me," he said.

Bhattacharjee, who had contested in last year's assembly elections but did not win, reassured that his focus as a member of the upper house of Parliament will be on the development of Tripura and its people.

This victory solidifies the BJP's position in the state and highlights the party's continued influence in Tripura's political landscape.
