Lucknow: At least 18 people were killed and 19 were injured after a double-decker bus hit a milk tanker and overturned on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Unnao during the wee hours of Wednesday morning. The accident took place around 5 am near Jojikot village in Behta Mujhawar police station area.
Additional Director General of Police, Lucknow, S B Shiradkar told that 14 men, three women and a child were killed.
The accident was so severe that the bus split in half. District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi said prima facie the bus, which was on its way to Delhi from Motihari in Bihar, was speeding and hit the milk tanker from behind.
The injured were immediately rushed to CHC Bangarmau Hospital and are under treatment. Bangarmau Circle Officer (CO) Arvind Kumar said due to the impact of the collision, both the bus and milk tanker overturned. Drivers of the two vehicles were among the dead. He said the injured were rushed to a hospital and their condition was stated to be stable.
Unnao SP Siddharth Shankar said, “Identification process of the deceased and injured are currently underway and their families will be informed at the earliest.”
Prime Minister Minister has expressed gried and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of each deceased victim in the Unnao accident. The injured will receive Rs. 50,000.
“The road accident in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh is extremely painful. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this. May God give them strength in this difficult time. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. Under the supervision of the state government, the local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way”, said PM Modi.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and took cognizance of the road accident in the Unnao district. He instructed district administration officials to ensure the injured received proper treatment and wished them a speedy recovery. Additionally, the Chief Minister directed officials to expedite relief efforts at the accident site.
Unnano DM Gaurang Rathi said, “Today at around 05.15 AM, a private bus coming from Motihari, Bihar collided with a milk tanker. 18 people have lost their lives and 19 others are injured in the accident. After the initial investigation, it looks like the bus was overspeeding.”
The incident, involving double-decker bus No. UP95 T 4720 and milk tanker No. UP70 CT 3999, occurred at approximately 05:15 am at kilometer 247 in Behta Mujawar police station. Upon receiving news of the accident, police from Behta Mujawar quickly arrived at the scene, rescued the injured, and began the necessary procedures after securing the bodies.
