New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday, May 29, rejected Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea for a 7-day extension of interim bail, forcing the AAP convener to surrender on June 2.
The Supreme Court refused to accept Kejirwal's application saying that the Chief Minister was given liberty to move the trial court for regular bail, and the plea was not maintainable.
A vacation bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and KV Viswanathan took note of the submissions of Kejriwal's lawyer, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, and said the decision on the listing of the interim plea will be taken by CJI Chandrachud as the judgement has been reserved in the main matter.
Kejriwal has sought a 7-day extension of his interim bail to undergo a host of medical tests, including a PET-CT scan, given his "sudden and unexplained weight loss coupled with high ketone levels", which are indicative of kidney, serious cardiac ailments and even cancer, PTI reported.
In his fresh plea, submitted on May 26, the Chief Minister said that he would surrender before Tihar jail authorities on June 9 instead of June 2.
Earlier, Kejriwal was granted interim bail from Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta on May 10 but was asked to surrender to Tihar jail again on June 2 after Lok Sabha elections Phase 7.
On May 17, the bench reserved the verdict on his challenge to the validity of his arrest by ED in a PMLA case linked to a liquor scam.
The Delhi Chief Minister was arrested in a money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy and is lodged in Tihar Jail.
