New Delhi: A person was killed and several others were injured after chaos ensued as multiple vehicles were buried under a cascade of rocks and boulders tumbling down from the heights above on the Gangotri Highway in Uttarkashi.

The mishap occurred when a sudden and massive rockfall descended upon the highway, catching commuters by surprise. Many vehicles found themselves trapped under the weight of the debris.  

Meanwhile, teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), NDRF and police have been rushed to the accident spot and commenced rescue operations. 

“On receiving information about a stone falling from a hill near Dabrani on Gangotri National Highway and some people being buried under it, Police, SDRF, NDRF teams are present on the spot, and rescue work is underway. Vehicles have been stopped for security reasons. Vehicles will be released after the route is completely safe”, tweeted Uttarakhand Police.
