New Delhi: A fresh video has surfaced showing traces of burnt cash outside the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court, intensifying the controversy surrounding the alleged recovery of unaccounted money.
The development comes in the wake of the explosive "Judge Cash" video, which has sent shockwaves across the country, raising transparency and faith in the Indian judiciary.
The latest visuals capture remnants of burnt ₹500 currency notes outside Justice Varma’s home in the national capital at Tughlaq Crescent.
In another shocking development, sources have told Republic that junior officers from the Delhi Police, who were present at the location where the cash was being burned, recorded the video. However, they were later ordered to delete it and prohibited from making any copies. The video, which is believed to contain critical evidence, was initially shared with senior police officials.
Sources further reveal that once the video became known to all relevant parties, internal directives were issued within the police force to erase the footage and ensure no copies were kept. Additionally, explicit instructions were given to prevent the video from being circulated.
The reasons for the orders to delete the footage remain uncertain, raising further concerns about the handling and transparency of the investigation. While it is still unclear whether the deletion of the video constitutes an attempt to destroy evidence, the incident has undoubtedly cast doubt on the public's trust in India's judiciary.
Hours after Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, submitted his report to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court published online, the report, CJI's response, Justice Yashwant Varma's statement defending himself and the photos and videos from the time of the fire incident.
In the video released, multiple burnt currency notes can be seen in the room as the firefighters continue to douse the fire. Referring to the burning notes, one of the firemen was heard saying in the video, “Gandhi Mein Aag Lag Rahi Hai Bhai…”
Despite the several videos surfacing online, Justice Yashwant Varma, in his statement, has denied the allegations and has maintained that no money has been kept at the storeroom by him or his family members. In his statement, the Delhi HC judge said, “I state unequivocally that no cash was ever placed in that storeroom either by me or any of my family members and strongly denounce the suggestion that the alleged cash belonged to us. The very idea or suggestion that this cash was kept or stored by us is totally preposterous. The suggestion that one would store cash in an open, freely accessible, and commonly used storeroom near the staff quarters or in an outhouse verges on the incredible and incredulous. It is a room completely disassociated from my living areas, and a boundary wall demarcates my living area from that outhouse. I only wish that the media had conducted some inquiry before I came to be indicted and defamed in the press.”
