Coimbatore: A 35-year-old man from Odisha slit his own throat at a government hospital in Coimbatore after being infected with rabies.
The victim, identified as Ram Chander from Odisha, was employed at a private firm in Coimbatore. He was bitten by a rabid dog a few days earlier. As his condition deteriorated, he was admitted to a hospital and placed in an isolation ward.
Within a few days, he began displaying aggressive and erratic behavior—symptoms of late-stage rabies.
According to reports, while in isolation, he shattered a glass pane covering a notice board and used the broken glass pieces to brutally injure himself.
The hospital authorities alerted the police but refrained from intervening immediately due to the risk of rabies transmission through bodily fluids.
However, by the time officials reached the hospital, Chander had lost a significant amount of blood and succumbed to his injuries.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident. Footage of his final moments, showing him acting aggressively, has surfaced online, sparking concerns about the severity of rabies.
Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that, in severe cases, can damage the central nervous system. Dogs are the primary transmitters of the virus in most cases. Taking timely vaccines is the only preventive measure against the disease, which spreads through the bite of infected animals. Symptoms include flu-like signs such as fever and headache, while severe cases lead to aggression, excessive saliva production, paralysis, and hydrophobia.
