Criminals open fire at police team in UP's Kannauj, one constable dead

A police official said that the incident took place when the police team had gone to arrest the history-sheeter at his house.

A police team was rounded up and fired upon by a notorious criminal and his family in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh leading to the death of one police constable. Police sources said that in the retaliatory firing by the police team, the alleged criminal and his son also sustained bullet injury.

Both the accused were later shifted to a nearby hospital in Kannauj, where they are being treated. After the incident, a case was registered at Vishungarh police station and an inquiry was initiated.

A police official said that the incident took place when the police team had gone to arrest the accused, who is also a history-sheeter, when suddenly the accused and his family opened fire at the police team. The accused has been identified as Ashok Kumar alias Munna Yadav.

History-sheeter, his son also sustain bullet injury, says police official

Briefing about the incident, Superintendent of Police, Amit Kumar Anand said that during the unfortunate incident, police constable Sachin Rathi (28) sustained a bullet injury, who succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the hospital.

According to the police, deceased constable Sachin Rathi was recruited into the police force in 2019. He was to get married in the coming February month to a woman constable.

The police official said that accused Munna Yadav was a history-sheeter having 20 cases registered against him.

SP Anand said, “On Monday, the police team received information that Munna Yadav was at his home following which the police team of Chhibramau and Vishungarh police station jointly laid siege to the house. As soon as the police team reached Munna’s house in Dharni Dheerpur Nagariya village, he along with his wife and son opened fire at the police personnel.”

“During the firing Constable Rathi received a bullet injury and was immediately rushed to Kanpur for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries late in the night,” the police official said.

The police team also fired in retaliation, during which the history-sheeter and his son got injured. Both of them were apprehended by the police and their firearms were seized. They were later shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Apart from the two pistols recovered from both the accused, a double barrel rifle was also recovered during a search at their house.

On the other hand, a full state honour was given to the deceased constable at the police lines, later in the day. Constable Rathi, who hailed from Shahdavar village in Budhana area of Muzaffarnagar district, was earlier posted in Saurikh police station in Kannauj district.
