Delhi Pollution: Air Quality Dips to 'Very Poor' Category, AQI Crosses 330

New Delhi: Delhi's air quality has taken a sharp hit as pollution levels rise significantly across the city. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in several areas, like Anand Vihar and Akshardham, has reached alarming levels, categorising them under ‘Very Poor’. 

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Anand Vihar and Akshardham both recorded an AQI of 334, indicating 'Very Poor' air quality. 

These Areas Also Record Alarming AQI 

Other areas of the capital also reported concerning AQI figures. India Gate registered an AQI of 251, placing it in the 'Poor' category, while the ITO area came in at 226, also under the 'Poor' category. Bhikaji Cama Place recorded an AQI of 273, and the AIIMS area stood at 253, both of which fall under 'Poor'. 

As smog continues to engulf parts of the city, with a thick layer visible in the Akshardham and AIIMS areas. Residents are feeling the effects of the rising pollution. One resident from Akshardham expressed frustration, and said, "For the past two days, the pollution has increased a lot, which is causing many problems. The government needs to take serious steps to control the situation."

PWD Sprinkler Water to Control Dust Pollution 

In response to the worsening conditions, the Public Works Department (PWD) has started sprinkling water in various parts of the city to help control dust pollution. This is part of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-1), which aims to reduce particulate matter in the air. 

Also keeping in mind the declining air quality, restrictions under Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) took effect in Delhi on 15 oct, Tuesday. 

GRAP Stage 1 also monitor strict checks on polluting vehicles, improved traffic management, and emission controls in industries, power plants, and brick kilns to help mitigate air pollution in the capital, according to the official.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".

Precautionary Measures and Health Concerns

Residents are being urged to take precautions, such as wearing masks and avoiding outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours. Dipping air quality poses serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues. These levels suggest that prolonged exposure could lead to respiratory problems and discomfort among healthy individuals, while those with pre-existing conditions may experience even worse effects.

Delhi Government is Doing Everything: Gopal Rai

Delhi's air quality has deteriorated to the 'poor' category due to changing weather conditions and the pollution level is expected to worsen after Diwali, Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Saturday.

Rai told PTI Videos that the Delhi government is doing everything it can to control dust pollution and needs the cooperation of residents.
