New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of dialogue over war while addressing the Russia-Ukraine conflict in a conversation with US computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman. He stated that India, as the land of Buddha and Gandhi, stands for peace and harmony, which is why the world listens to its voice in global matters.
Highlighting his good relations with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy , PM Modi said he could urge Russia that war is not the solution while reminding Ukraine that battlefields do not bring real solutions. He clarified that India is not neutral but firmly committed to peace.
In the three-hour-plus interview, PM Modi also spoke about the significance of criticism in democracy, calling it the "soul of democracy." He stated that he welcomes genuine criticism but pointed out that well-informed and sharp criticism is rare nowadays.
"I have a strong belief that criticism is the soul of democracy. If democracy truly runs in your veins, you must embrace it," PM Modi said. He added that true criticism requires deep study, thorough research, and careful analysis, whereas many today resort to baseless accusations.
"In fact, I believe we should have more criticism, and it should be sharp and well-informed. But my real complaint is that nowadays, what we see isn't real criticism," he said.
PM Modi further explained that allegations benefit no one and only lead to unnecessary conflicts. "That’s why I always welcome criticism openly. And whenever false accusations arise, I calmly continue serving my country with complete dedication," he said.
The conversation highlighted India's position as a strong advocate for global peace and a firm believer in constructive dialogue over conflict.
