PM Modi expresses grief over death of Tamil actor-politician Vijayakanth

Vijayakanth was admitted to a hospital in Chennai after he complained of facing difficulties while breathing

Chennai: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakanth, who was hospitalised after testing positive for COVID-19, passed away on Thursday morning. The 71-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Chennai after he complained of facing difficulties while breathing. He was put on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia.

The MIOT Hospital in Chennai issued a statement confirming the demise of the DMDK leader. "Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of medical staff he passed away in the morning on 28th December 2023," the statement read. Vijayakanth had founded the DMDK party in 2005 and served as a legislator twice. The actor-politician had also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. The DMDK is a regional party in Tamil Nadu.

PM Modi expresses grief over Vijayakanth's demise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Vijayakanth. PM Modi said that the actor-politician was his close friend and his death has left a void that will be hard to fill.

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi wrote,”Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti.”
