New Delhi: One of the most important Islamic festivals, Eid Ul Adha or Bakra Eid, is marked to  commemorate Prophet Ibrahim's test of 'faith.' Celebrated across the world, the ritual includes offering prayers in mosques to hosting feasts with family. In India, the festival is celebrated by Muslims to commemorate it as 'an act of obedience to Allah (God).'

This week, the Supreme Court of Saudi called on all Muslims across the country to participate in the sighting of the crescent moon of the Arabic month Dhu Al Hijjah today evening.

"The Supreme Court wishes all Muslims throughout the Kingdom to investigate the sighting of the crescent of the month of Dhul-Hijjah on the evening of Thursday 11/29/1445 AH - according to the Umm
Al-Qura calendar - corresponding to 6/6/2024 AD."

Eid Al Adha means "festival of sacrifice," honours the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. However, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead. The festival emphasises on the importance of faith, obedience, and sacrifice.

Eid Al Adha 2024 Date

Eid Al Adha falls on the 10th of Dhu Al Hijjah. Since the festival is marked after the moon is spotted, if the moon is seen on June 6, then Dhul Hijjah will begin on June 7. However, if the moon is not spotted, then Dhul Hijjah begin on June 8.

Meanwhile, Arafah Day is on June 15 (Dhul Hijjah 9) and Eid Al Adha is on June 165 (Dhul Hijjah 10). Furthermore, if Dhul Hijjah begin on the 8th, then Arafah Day will be on June 19. Eid Al Adha is then on June 17.

The second of the holy Hajj pilgrimage is marked by Arafah Day and it falls on the ninth day of Dhu Al Hijjah. Following Arafah Day, Muslims across the world celebrate Eid Al Adah on the 10th day of the Dhu Al Hijjah.

This festival is a time to share meals with family, friends and those who are less fortunate.
